Sunday Sermon
Do To Others As You Would Have Them Do To You
“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
Opening Thought
This is the most famous rule of life in all the world — often called The Golden Rule. It is not just good advice; it is God's standard for how we treat every person we meet. It sums up everything God taught us about love and justice.
Many people say: “I will treat you the way you treat me.” But Jesus says: “Treat others the way you want to be treated — even if they do not treat you that way.” That is the difference between human thinking and God's heart.
1. What This Truly Means
It is a simple test you can use every time:
Before you speak
ask: “Would I want someone to say this to me?”
Before you act
ask: “Would I want someone to do this to me?”
Before you judge
ask: “Would I want to be judged this way?”
Biblical Reference
“You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”
God does not say “love others more than yourself” — He says love them as you love yourself.
You know what you need: kindness, respect, patience, fairness, and forgiveness — give exactly that to everyone else.
Scripture
Biblical Examples
Jesus — Our Perfect Example
When people mocked Him, beat Him, and nailed Him to the cross — He did not curse them back.
He prayed:
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
He treated them with mercy — exactly how He wants us to be treated when we make mistakes.
Joseph — Forgiving Those Who Hurt Him
His brothers threw him in a pit, sold him as a slave, and lied about him.
Years later, when he had all power to punish them — instead he fed them, protected them, and said:
“You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.”
He gave them the grace he would have wanted if he had been in their place.
The Good Samaritan
A man was beaten and left dying.
The religious leaders walked past him — but a Samaritan, who was supposed to be his enemy, stopped, bound his wounds, paid for his care, and made sure he was safe.
Luke 10:25–37
He treated the stranger exactly as he would want someone to treat him if he was hurt and alone.
The Unforgiving Servant
A king forgave a servant a huge debt — but that same servant refused to forgive a small debt someone owed him.
The king said:
“You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not also have compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?”
He broke the Golden Rule — and judgment came upon him.
Day by day
Everyday Illustrations
The Bus or Shop
If you are tired, you want people to be patient with you — so be patient with the cashier or the driver.
Church & Family
If you want people to listen to you — listen to them first. If you do not like being gossiped about — never speak evil of anyone.
Work & Business
If you want fair pay and honest work — give honest work and fair treatment to others.
A Mirror
When you treat others well, you are like a mirror — showing them the goodness God has shown you.
Jesus Warns Us
“For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
— Luke 6:38
If you give judgment — you will receive judgment.
If you give mercy — you will receive mercy.
If you give love — you will receive love.
Prayer Points
- 1Father, forgive me for every time I have treated others worse than I want to be treated.
- 2Lord, give me Your heart — to love others as I love myself.
- 3When people hurt or wrong me — help me respond with grace, not revenge.
- 4Teach me to speak well of others, just as I want people to speak well of me.
- 5Break every habit of selfishness, pride, and harshness in my life.
- 6Help me treat everyone — rich or poor, known or stranger — with equal respect.
- 7Let my life be a reflection of Your love to everyone I meet.
- 8I declare: I will live by Your Golden Rule, in Jesus' name!
Final Exhortation
Beloved — this rule does not depend on how good other people are. It depends on who God is in you. Let us stop saying: “They don't deserve it.” — and start saying: “God commands it.”
Treat others with the same love, patience, forgiveness, and kindness you hope God and people will show you — and you will live a life that pleases God and blesses the world!
Amen!
